GitHub has unveiled stacked pull requests in public preview, introducing a sophisticated approach to managing complex code changes that promises to revolutionize how development teams handle large-scale modifications. This feature addresses a fundamental challenge in modern software development: balancing the need for comprehensive changes with the practical limitations of code review processes.

The concept behind stacked pull requests centers on decomposing substantial modifications into interconnected, reviewable segments. Rather than overwhelming reviewers with monolithic pull requests, developers can now structure their work as ordered sequences of focused changes. Each layer in the stack represents a specific component of the overall modification, enabling reviewers to examine changes incrementally while understanding their relationship to the broader feature.

Implementation requires installing GitHub's CLI extension using the command 'gh extension install github/gh-stack'. The system integrates comprehensively with GitHub's ecosystem, supporting interaction through the web interface, GitHub CLI, mobile applications, and notably, GitHub Copilot through a dedicated skill. This multi-platform approach ensures teams can adopt stacked workflows regardless of their preferred development environment.

The review mechanism preserves GitHub's existing quality controls while introducing enhanced granularity. Reviewers can examine individual stack layers without being overwhelmed by the complete scope of changes. A visual stack map provides context, helping reviewers understand how their current examination fits into the larger work. This approach enables parallel review processes, where team members can simultaneously evaluate different layers without blocking progress.

Early adoption feedback demonstrates significant workflow improvements. Vercel's Next.js team has employed stacked pull requests for months, reporting enhanced ability to ship substantial features through manageable increments. TED's engineering organization highlighted how the feature addresses bottlenecks created by AI-enhanced developer productivity, where increased code generation was overwhelming traditional review processes.

The merging system offers operational flexibility through multiple deployment strategies. Teams can merge complete stacks simultaneously or deploy individual layers incrementally. The platform automatically manages rebasing and retargeting of dependent pull requests, eliminating the manual maintenance overhead traditionally associated with multi-branch workflows.

This development reflects GitHub's recognition of evolving software development practices. As AI tools accelerate code production, traditional review processes face new challenges in maintaining quality while accommodating increased velocity. Stacked pull requests provide a native solution that scales with enhanced productivity while preserving collaborative oversight.

The rollout includes progressive deployment of merge queue support, ensuring enterprise teams can integrate stacked workflows with existing CI/CD infrastructure. This measured approach acknowledges the critical role these tools play in production environments where stability and reliability are paramount.

For the broader development ecosystem, this launch signals a maturation of collaborative coding practices. It acknowledges that modern software development requires sophisticated tools to manage increasing complexity while maintaining code quality and team productivity. The feature represents GitHub's commitment to evolving its platform to meet changing developer needs.
